Shawn: A Virtual Road Trip with the Brother I Never Had

Shawn is a VR prototype born from a personal place - imagining conversations with the brother I never knew. It's an exploration of 'what ifs' set against the backdrop of a virtual road trip.

In this experience, users interact with Shawn, an AI-driven character, as they travel through digital landscapes. Our conversations unfold naturally, triggered by the journey's progress and the topics we discuss. These talks aren't just chatter - they shape the experience, influencing elements like the music playing in our virtual car.

The technical side of Shawn involves a waypoint system in Unity, with event triggers that connect the narrative arc to specific locations and user interactions. The AI is trained on a set of phrases and intentions, allowing it to recognise certain keywords or user intents as triggers for specific responses or story progressions. This creates a more dynamic and responsive conversation flow. There's also real-time lip sync and character animation, though I'm still working on refining these in future iterations.

What interests me most about this project is its potential beyond just storytelling. I see it as a possible tool for processing emotions or exploring relationships in a safe, virtual space. It's not therapy, but it might offer a new way to reflect on our personal narratives.

As part of the design and prototyping process for Social Seeds, a platform aimed at encouraging volunteerism in Singapore, I played a key role in refining the user experience. Through quantitative and qualitative research, I helped define the ideal user personas and advised on growth hacking strategies to reach new audience segments.

A major contribution was introducing gamification mechanics that enhanced the volunteer experience without coming across as gimmicky. Rather than dispensing arbitrary rewards, the system allowed volunteers to organically build a blockchain-verifiable "Proof of Character" profile highlighting their achievements. This served as a digital resume capturing their volunteer history and impact. I also surfaced new features optimised for desired business outcomes.

The thoughtful gamification approach elevated Social Seeds beyond a transactional platform into one fostering meaningful personal growth and societal appreciation for volunteers.

I conceptualised and designed a prototype for an exchange platform dealing in social tokens powered by blockchain technology. The prototype demonstrated how users could trade reputation tokens in a secure, transparent marketplace.

Through research, I identified potential customer segments that could benefit from issuing and exchanging social credits as incentives. The prototype visualised key use cases such as determining a token's valuation factors, executing trades between different credit types, and managing the lifecycle process including token retirement.

This illustrated how blockchain's attributes could create a revolutionary social credits ecosystem, allowing organisations to incentivise positive user behaviours and community members to monetise their reputational value across multiple domains.

Bot Hunters

Bot Hunters was an innovative national TV program that blended drama with interactive reality-game elements to captivate young audiences in Singapore from 2014-2015. The premise followed ordinary citizens transforming into a volunteer force called the Bot Hunters to defend against the nefarious schemes of a villainous robot named Bad Robot and his Henchmen horde.

Modelled after video games, each episode featured celebrities alongside child contestants role-playing as heroes or villains while completing unique physical and mental challenges tied to an overarching storyline. This first-of-its-kind hybrid format allowed digital-native kids aged 9-12 to live out their fantasies in a playable adventure.

Bot Hunters struck a chord, generating massive social media buzz with over 50,000 impressions, thousands of webisode views, fan pages created by viewers, and even a petition launched for a second season - a testament to the irresistible appeal of fusing storytelling with gameplay.

• • The pet then guides their human partner toward a hidden physical treasure box using their heightened sense of hearing.
• • Once located, the duo must work together to complete a physical challenge, such as executing synchronised motions or vocal commands, in order to finally unlock the box and reveal its contents.

This multi-sensory experience taps into the distinct capabilities of humans and animals, requiring mutual communication, trust and teamwork to succeed.
